Got a real treat this time around for you, folks, in the form of a webcomic you may not have recently heard of.  One of the great themes of webcomics is geeks and their assorted paraphernalia, like movies, music, books and video games.  Let’s face it, anyone who calls himself (or herself) a geek has a fascination with at least one item on that list, and probably more than one.  Me, it’s all four in varying amounts.  You should see my house sometime.

But anyway!  This time around I’ve got JT from Between Failures talking to me in the Five Question Slot O’ Doom (I’m thinking about trademarking that.  You know, like that old show Banzai and its Lady One Question or Mister Shake Hands Man) and he’s got some geektastic things to tell us about comic book conversion movies, pop culture in general, and the all-time best ever movie quote.

Since I was just complaining recently about how vampires don’t seem to be quite the cultural staple that they used to be, I’m sort of interested in this recent development. It turns out that Last Blood, a webcomic that is not to be confused with the upcoming HBO series True Blood, is going to be turned into a movie. For reals.

2007-01-17 - \Last Blood isn’t the kind of webcomic that features lonely nerds and anthropomorphic iPods; it’s a serious affair with a zombie apocalypse and people with shotguns and…uh…I only got to page eleven, because you have to load each page on its own and it’s slow going. But the art is pretty awesome and the story looks like it’s building up to something cool.

You wouldn’t think a writer for Playboy would be the guy calling for decorum and restraint in a trade show, but here were are.

The old E3 was a three-day migraine with a side order of Asperger’s Syndrome, which turns out is neither pretty nor pleasant. Plus, some of us were trying to get work done.

I want you to know up front on this one that I am, almost, totally talking out of my ass on this one.  I have very, VERY, little evidence to support this which is why I’m putting it forth as a guess.

I’m beginning to wonder if Repo! The Genetic Opera, Paris Hilton notwithstanding, is going to bypass theatres entirely and go straight to video.  There are already some people who think that Repo! will get a tiny theatrical release and THEN go to video.  This is very, very possible–and probably more likely than my own guess–but I’ve got one interesting bit of data that nudged me over into the “no theatrical release” category.

If you’re like me, you occasionally find yourself in the mood to watch more than one movie. Everything sounds good. You’d like a nice dose of action, some horror, some car chases, a few Medieval adventures, maybe some Tolkien-style fantasy, and a little sci-fi to boot. What can you do to scratch  that itch?

Apparently, that’s the question that director Neil Marshall was attempting to answer when he made Doomsday. I was sort of looking forward to it; although it was clearly a take on Escape from New York, I thought maybe Marshall would have something fun to add. After all, his previous effort, The Descent, was very good – I caught it on a double bill with Snakes on a Plane at my school’s second-run theater, and I can honestly say that it ended up being better than the main feature. I was surprised by some of the warm-hearted humor and character development that found its way into what was, essentially, a classic “trapped in a cave” horror movie. Not to mention that, unlike far too many “horror” movies nowadays, it was genuinely scary. Whether you’re afraid of the dark or the monsters who reside in it, The Descent will push your buttons.
