30 Rock “The Bubble” 3/19

Well, we knew it wouldn’t last. Liz Lemon’s romances always go south, particularly when they feature guest stars who are busy on other shows. It’s just a matter of when and how. This time it was Mad Men’s John Hamm, playing a very sexy doctor who seemed too good to be true. And now, finally, we’ve found the catch.

He’s too pretty.

“The Bubble” plays on our belief that the “beautiful people” of the world are given special treatment. Sure, you’ll laugh at a sexy girl’s awful jokes just because she’s so cute and trying so darn hard, but it’s not like they’re living some kind of charmed life. Free oil changes? Sure. Free cars? Most likely not, unless they take up with the mob.

And it’s especially not true for men, as “The Bubble” asserts. The show is only being half-serious, but humor is always funniest when it’s based on truth. Especially in New York City, even the likes of John Hamm doesn’t have waitresses falling all over him. Well, the real John Hamm might, but it’s because he’s John Hamm. Not because he’s pretty.

The B plots are about Tracy renegotiating his contract and Jenna getting a new haircut. Really. It’s about as interesting as it sounds, and considering that the entire A plot relies upon John Hamm acting like an entitled jackass, the episode wears thin pretty quickly. If you ask me, “30 Rock” is on the fast track to cancellation. I’d be sadder if the show’s quality hadn’t declined so sharply in this season. Come on, Tina Fey. You can do better than this.
