An ironic Super Bowl XLIII “recap”: Warner throws four interceptions and retires, Parker wins MVP and request for BCS-type system, “Big Ben” runs for 50 yards, Fitzgerald requests for trade

Troy Polamolu returned one of Kurt Warner’s four interceptions for a touchdown and Willie Parker winged past the Cardinals for 135 yards on the ground and two scores as the Pittsburgh Steelers won their record-breaking sixth Super Bowl 31-14 over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday in Tampa.

Super Bowl XLIII was as lopsided as predicted. The favored Steelers dominated the Cardinals on both sides of the ball and two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner was a non-factor throughout the game, completing just 20 of 44 passes for 195 yards.

The 37-year-old threw two touchdowns to Larry Fitzgerald late in the fourth-quarterback, butthe late rally was not enough to overcome the surging Steelers.

After the game, Warner announced his retirement and said he was too old to play the game. Warner wished Matt Leinart luck with the dynasty he created.

Warner also predicted that the Cardinals would never make the Super Bowl, let alone playoffs ever again.

The Cardinals defense looked worse at times than it had during the regular season. Ben Roethlisberger ran for 50 yards and threw for 300 more, completing 28 of 35 passes.

Late in the first quarter the Cardinals were stopped on a first-and-goal situation and turned the ball over on downs.

The very next play “Big Ben” connected with Hines Ward for a 99-yard screen pass and Ward trotted his way, untouched, to the end zone.

Warner was requested by the Cardinals’ coaches to avoid throwing the ball to Anquan Boldin, and Warner succumbed to their request.

Fitzgerald, who caught all 20 of Warner’s competitions, angrily requested for a trade after the disappointing game.

While being interviewed by his father, a journalist covering the game, he said he was tired of playing for a losing franchise and called the whole season a fluke.

Fitzgerald also said that he was utterly shocked that this team had made it this far after expecting to win no more than 8 regular season games when the preseason had concluded.

Steeler head coach Mike Tomlin told the media that he was ecstatic to have beaten Ken Whisenhunt for the Steelers job two years ago and this victory proved that he was indeed the man for the job.

“Big Ben” said that the Steelers win was not as sweet as their victory just a few years ago, because he knew they were going to win.

Before the game, Roethlisberger had told numerous reporters that he was not even sure why they had to play the game when the Cardinals were guaranteed to lose.

In an exclusive interview with ESPN after winning the Super Bowl MVP award, Parker said that he did not deserve the award: the Cardinals did.

Parker attributed his success throughout the game due to a lack of a good defense on the Cardinals side.

Parker also argued that the NFL playoff system was a joke if a team like Arizona could win it all. Parker plead for league officials to consider taking a new approach to the NFL playoffs. Parker said the NFL should adopt a new system similar to the BCS to avoid having teams that don’t belong in the Super Bowl making it all the way.
