First Criterion announced that Burnout Paradise would have free downloadable content that will add new islands to race in. If that wasn’t good enough, they announced today that they have yet another content pack coming later this summer. For the first time in Burnout history, you will now be able to race with motorcycles! Hey, it worked with Project Gotham Racing 4 and Mario Kart Wii, right?

Having this much new, free content is unprecedented in console gaming. Sure, PC owners have been spoiled by Valve and Epic supplying all the free content they could consume, along with the requisite player-created mods. But console gamers have gotten used to buying a new iteration every year with nominal updates. Criterion is changing the entire system!

After sinking in 30+ hours into a rental copy of Burnout Paradise, I feel I owe them one game purchase. How could I not? If they are giving away all new tracks and vehicles, the least I could do is pay them for the original game. Now who’s with me? If we don’t support this free content we may lose it entirely.
