Clint Eastwood Goes Horror??

Man, it’s not every day that I get to do a spit-take all over my computer desk (you have no idea how hard it is to get Dew out of Office Depot fiberboard), and this was one of those days.

I just read about how Clint Eastwood was, very possibly, going to wind up directing the upcoming thriller movie Hereafter and I just about completely lost it.

Now, there are certain things you just don’t expect in life.  You don’t expect the Avon Lady to offer to renovate your den.  The paperboy doesn’t come to the house to fix your lawnmower.  Software salesmen generally don’t try to fix the government.  Except for that one time…but anyway.  And you certainly don’t expect a hard-charging action hero to start handling supernatural horror / thriller movies.

You see, at last count, that’s exactly what Hereafter was, a supernatural horror / thriller sort of movie that was in the same vein as The Sixth Sense.  Now, I’m having a very hard time understanding how Clint Eastwood thinks that he could ever possibly know enough about horror movies to actually direct one and have it turn out any kind of good.  Note that important distinction–any putz can direct a horror movie, after all; Ulli Lommel is perfect proof of this–but it takes skill to make it turn out half-decently.

I find myself intrigued yet skeptical by this whole affair…Clint Eastwood trying to handle a horror flick?  On the one hand, this strange new combination could be the proverbial peanut butter in our equally proverbial chocolate.  And yet, on the other hand, it could easily be a screaming disaster of a movie not fit to be used to start fires with.

I guess we’ll ultimately have to wait and see…it’s not as though they’ve even finished the talking stages, but the idea is enough to keep me preoccupied for a while.
