Fable II collector’s edition, now with fewer collectibles

There’s a running joke about Peter Molyneux, designer of such games as Fable and Black & White. He’ll talk to the press about how groundbreaking his upcoming game will be, but he’ll get carried away and promise all kinds of amazing features that never actually make it to the final product.

The same thing just happened with Fable 2, but it’s not the game itself that got parts cut. It’s the bonus features in the collector’s edition.

When the collector’s edition was first announced back in July, it consisted of a figurine, five tarot fate cards, a making-of documentary, a fancy box and some exclusive in-game content. It was put on preorder sale for $80, $20 over the cost of the regular game.

Since then, it’s been trimmed back due to “supply chain issues.” The cards, the box and the figurine are all gone, and the price dropped to $70.

(There was a mistaken report earlier this week that the soundtrack and developer’s diary had been cut from the collector’s edition. This was untrue because they were never supposed to be part of it in the first place.)

Lionhead will be putting the cards for free in PDF format, but at least a few preorder customers have got to be feeling bait-and-switched right now. Maybe they can sit and fume while they’re waiting for the developers to patch online co-op into the game.
