Eat Drink Man Woman

Dubbed “not a movie to see an an empty stomach,” this delectable Ang Lee flick tells the story of a cook with no taste buds and his rebellious daughters. Though he can no longer enjoy eating, master chef Chu still elaborate Sunday meals for his daughters – but they are too self-absorbed to understand his unspoken message of affection for them. Fans warn against getting the dubbed version of this Chinese movie – it’s subtitles or nothing!

Ratatouille

A charming, inspiring story of a cook…who just happens to be a rat. This Pixar hit shows the authentic process of developing one’s talent in the kitchen – by smelling, experimenting, more smelling, and – above all – perseverance in the face of all setbacks. Our hero, known mostly as “Little Chef,” develops his specialty (titular) dish with the help of a mostly untalented but hard-working chef’s apprentice. But will it be enough to impress the snobbiest food critic the world has ever known?

Waitress

Handmade pies: easy to enjoy, difficult to master, but second nature to Keri Russell’s titular character. The gorgeous range of pies she creates throughout this movie, which chronicles her struggle to break free from her abusive husband and make a new life for her unborn baby, will make your mouth water. Soon you’ll be singing along with the family lullaby: “baby don’t cry, gonna bake a pie, gonna bake a pie with a heart in the middle.”

Woman on Top

Featuring Penelope Cruz as a seductive Brazilian chef, this chick flick features an unusual hook: Isabella, the protagonist, suffers from crippling motion sickness that kicks in whenever she isn’t in control of her own movement. Though she eventually gets a successful cooking show in the U.S., she still seeks true love and happiness – and the men in her life aren’t making it easy.

Chocolat

Ah, chocolate – that most decadent of foods. Its mysterious powers of seduction are celebrated in Chocolat, which, despite its title and setting, is an American film directed by Swedish director Lasse Hallström. Featuring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, this film will make you crave fine, handmade chocolates.
