Gore Verbinski Almost Absolutely Certain to Direct BioShock Movie

Apparently, this is news to a lot of people.  But given the way Hollywood works, it’s nice to get some assurance for a change.  Rumors become news and get debunked almost as fast in the amorphous blob that is Hollywood culture, but as of right now, we have the strongest possible assurances that Gore Verbinski will in fact be directing the BioShock movie.

BioShock, for those of you who don’t count yourselves gamers, is the hugely popular video game originally released on Xbox 360 about an underwater city called Rapture, created and run by eccentric plutocrat Andrew Ryan.  Designed to be a place where innovators of all stripes could create without fear of censorship or reprisal, it became a strange mishmash of science fiction, spare-parts gadgetry run amok, and 1950s-era culture.  The problem, of course, is that outside Rapture the world has just celebrated 1960, but in many ways, Rapture is ahead of us all.  Especially in the arena of genetic experimentation, giving rise to consumer goods called Plasmids, injectible serums that give their user super powers: pyrokinesis, telekinesis, and even limited mind control is just a few bucks in a vending machine away.

Naturally, this gave rise to a class system–haves and have-nots–and as Rapture’s population swelled, so too its problems.

The video game featured lots of chilling visuals and a deep and engrossing storyline.  This gives director Gore Verbinski plenty to work with, and we know from experience that he’s handled Pirates of the Caribbean in a fashion no one had any right to expect.  It was a RIDE, for crying out loud, and Verbinski was partially responsible for turning it into one of the biggest trilogies ever released.

Thusly, as someone who enjoyed Verbinski’s crowning series and the source material he’ll be working with, I find myself eagerly awaiting a chance to get BioShock-ed.
