I tell you this…I believe I am officially burnt out on Saw surprises.
There is nothing they can do now to surprise me. They’ve done the most bizarre things I’ve seen anyone do to a franchise. They’ve played musical directors. They’ve built a VH1 reality show for the express purpose of finding ONE ACTRESS to play on Saw VI. Don’t even get me started on Saw IV.
And now, they’ve found yet another new director to helm Saw VI, and this gomer is a REAL winner. Check out what Kevin Greutert had to say about his plans for six:
“Out of the five movies, Saw I is my favorite because I thought it had the most out of the bunch. It was very stylistic but also referenced giallo filmmakers. It had a good twist, but then it also had good dramatic elements. But I also loved Saw II with the adrenaline and the pace of the thing. It moved fast enough – because Saw I was kind of slow and meticulous and Saw II was more breathless. I’d love to be able to do both.”
So…he wants to be slow…and meticulous…and breathless. Um…you DO know that’s a logical impossibility, right? It’s not possible to be fast AND slow at the same time. And any time I hear film school talk come out of a director my Pretention Alarm starts clanging like I’ve only got twelve minutes to reach minimum safe distance.
I approved of the job Hackl did. Genuinely. Honestly. Truly, madly, deeply. I was expecting a flaming wreckage out of Saw V and Hackl and company made it an easy contender for one of the best. I say one of, of course, as I preferred two to one for exactly the reasons Greutert described.
But then maybe that’s an upshot. The guy saw what I saw. And sure, he preferred the first where I preferred the second, but switching around two and one isn’t exactly cause for alarm. Maybe Gruetert can pull this off after all.
Maybe.
