For years, you’ve enjoyed movies about my antics. At times, you’ve turned to your friends and bragged that you have a much better way of getting out of my traps. You think you’re worthy of life. You’re convinced that if this happened to you, you’d get the better of me.
Now, it’s time to pay the piper.
That’s right, eager Saw fan: there is going to be a video game. I don’t normally stray into video gaming territory on this blog, but it’s movie-related enough that I think I can get away with it. Besides, Saw!
The Saw series fairly screams “I WOULD MAKE AN AWESOME VIDEO GAME.” The scenarios invite the viewer to try and find his way out of Jigsaw’s traps, and what better way to enhance this experience than actually putting him in the situation? The only way they could have ruined it was by rushing a tie-in game in a few months, like most movies do. It seems they’ve chosen to take a slightly different route.
The Saw videogame, which is being developed by Konami, is supposed to come out this fall to coincide with the release of Saw VI (which does, apparently, exist). I’ve got reservations about the movie – the last one was almost completely forgettable – but I have a glimmer of hope that the game will be as awesome as it should be. They’ve already got some screenshots, and something that may or may not be an actual synopsis:
One man. One plan. One foot. Yes, the doctor is in! With a strange twist of fate and a revengeful plot, get ready for the most anticipated event of Saw. Face your fears at his operating table. Know that no one is safe from his sickness. Chills and screams are his true pleasure. Oh…and Blood? You’ll be drenched in it.
It makes it sound like they’re bringing Gordon back as a villain, which I guess wouldn’t be the most outlandish thing that’s ever happened in Saw. Whether or not Cary Elwes will ever return is still one of those great mysteries of Saw; luckily, Tobin Bell is lending his voice to Jigsaw. It’s not clear where (if at all) the game will fit into the continuity of the films, but I’m pretty psyched. After all, to quote Julie Benz in the Saw V trailer:
It’s Jigsaw.
