Like so many stories, it all begins with some friends who just want to party.
Does the world need another comedy about high school boys on a desperate quest to get laid? You wouldn’t think so, but Hollywood has plenty of room for more flicks like Superbad. Starring Arrested Development’s Michael Cera and budding “that guy” character actor Jonah Hill, Superbad is joyfully vulgar in a way that Clerks only aspired to be.
This tale of chivalry lends a certain depth to a high school student’s constant quest for alcohol: they’re more interested in impressing girls than getting wasted. Beneath it all lies the heart of the story; two close friends, who have been with each other for their entire lives, are afraid to be apart.
The two parallel stories running through the film are equally strong. In one, Evan (Cera) and Seth (Hill) try to make it to a party, held by Seth’s crush and with Evan’s would-be lady in attendance, and in the other their friend Fogell attempts to procure alcohol with a fake I.D. When the liquor store is robbed, Fogell gets caught up with two oddball cops, who seem to believe his paper-thin story and his Hawaii license bearing one name: McLovin.
As silly as some of the characters’ adventures might be, Superbad maintains its integrity, staying lovable to the core. It’s yet another step in the ever-accelerating career of Michael Cera, who will be starring in the upcoming film Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist from Lionsgate Entertainment.
