Even in the middle of his disbarment, Jack Thompson remains a reliable source for the lulz.
Thompson has been named as a recipient of a 2008 Freedom Award at the Utah County-sponsored America’s Freedom Festival. The nominees personify some or all of the festival’s traditional values of “family, freedom, God and country”
The GamePolitics editorial questioning the choice lists Thompson’s recent greatest hits, such as being recommended for a 10-year disbarment by the Florida Bar, being disallowed from submitting filings to the Florida Supreme Court partly because he included porn pictures in a motion, receiving a visit from the U.S. Marshals after complaining that perhaps he should have killed someone like the prisoners at Gitmo to get his point across, and my personal favorite:
* called for the impeachment of Utah’s Republican Attorney General when the AG suggested that a video game bill written by Thompson would be unconstitutional
Thompson’s Utah legislation mirrors the legislation he wrote for Louisiana, which was subsequently struck down on First Amendment grounds, netting the Entertainment Software Association a cool $91,000 in taxpayer money for legal fees.
Utah County, I know the last thing you want is a lecture from a self-described coastal elitist like myself. I don’t want to get on your case anyway, I never quite bought into all that “What’s the matter with Kansas?” stuff. But I do have to suggest that maybe a guy with a track record of writing legislation that unlawfully restricts First Amendment freedoms isn’t the best choice for a 2008 Freedom Award.
