I Was Cured, All Right.

As controversial as it is beloved, A Clockwork Orange is one of the films that has helped to define American cinema. Like many stories, it examines the meaning of “humanity,” “goodness,” and other arbitrary societal values. Based on a 1962 novel by Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange is considered one of Stanley Kubrick’s greatest movies.

A Clockwork OrangeDid You Know?

Malcolm McDowell sustained many injuries as protagonist Alex DeLarge. During the torturous “cure” sequence, he scratched a cornea, broke a few ribs, and nearly drowned.

The title “A Clockwork Orange” is a play on words by author Anthony Burgess. In Malaysia, “orang” means “man,” thus the title refers not to a clockwork fruit but a clockwork Alex – perfect and machine-like after his treatment.

There are many continuity errors in A Clockwork Orange, which Kubrick says he allowed on purpose, to disorient the viewer.

McDowell and Kubrick became friendly during shooting, and often spent hours playing table tennis. McDowell was later chagrined to learn that these hours had been docked from his paycheck.

For the Korova Milkbar scene, Kubrick insisted that the milk dispensers be emptied, cleaned, and refilled hourly. (The milk curdled quickly under the studio lights.)
