Summer is a slow time for T.V. news. You don’t have to tell me that. It’s hard to dig up something interesting every day, which is why I like to spend a good chunk of my articles just rambling about my life and why I’m so awesome. It’s easier than finding actual information about things.
It’s not my fault, though, is it? Summertime is dead for T.V. Although summer premieres are more common than ever, that doesn’t change the overwhelming sentiment that summertime is dead air. Every day in the summer is like Sunday: reruns, reruns, reruns. Occasionally a new show that the networks are sure won’t be successful. Then, more reruns.
Apparently, there is some actual value in reruns – specifically, marathons. Yahoo! T.V. News is similarly strapped for story topics, so they bring this to the table: reality T.V. is now more popular than ever, thanks to marathons.
“You can start watching TV at 8 in the morning and follow Season 2 for ‘Project Runway’ all the way,” says Andy Cohen, Bravo’s senior vp programming and production. “It’s exciting to watch the progression of creativity and excellence in a competition setting and makes for an amazing arc to follow in one afternoon.”
So, there you have it. Reality T.V. is a type of programming that benefits from being mashed together into one butt-numbing session. Who knew?
