You can learn a lot of things from T.V. shows – especially in the month of June.
As we all know, June is not only the bridge from spring to summer, it’s also “the wedding month.” Across the country, pretty much everyone can count on good weather. Beautiful sunshine and easy travel conditions have led many brides to choose June as the month for their special daaaaaaaaay.
For those who’ve dreamed of a perfect fairytale wonderland from the age of six, wedding planning is a snap. They know exactly what they want, how they want it, and what shade of green the ushers’ ties ABSOLUTELY HAS TO BE IN OR IT WILL RUIN EVERYTHING. For the rest of us, unsure if we buy into the myth of One Perfect Day of Romance, planning the perfect wedding can be a little harder. But take heart: as long as you have your loved one by your side, somebody to sign the license, and a smile, everything will go just fine. So pop in a DVD of your favorite T.V. show and watch some of these weddings – you might just learn something. (If that doesn’t ease your mind enough, saunter down the aisle to The Offbeat Bride blog and fill your head with taffeta-free visions of happiness. It helped me, and it can help you too.)
(Oh, and…spoilers ahead.)

3.22 – My Best Friend’s Wedding
The Bride: Carla, nurse
The Groom: Turk, doctor
The Wedding: Didn’t actually happen, in the strictest sense of the word. Because of a sudden schedule-change that demanded Turk be in surgery just before the ceremony, he didn’t quite make it to the church on time. But the reception went on as planned, despite the fact that you could cut the tension between J.D. and Elliot with a knife.
The Lesson: Leave early. Really early. But even if something goes horribly wrong, chances are, your guests will still love the party.
The Simpsons
6.19 – Lisa’s Wedding
The Bride: Lisa, obviously
The Groom: Hugh, British person
The Wedding: Also didn’t actually happen. (Noticing a pattern here?) Here, a fortune teller favors Lisa with a glimpse into her future. When she meets charming British student Hugh, the two quickly fall in love and become engaged. Despite all they have in common, however, there is one difference that Hugh and Lisa just can’t reconcile. He can’t stand her family. (And who can blame him?)
The Lesson: If your intended is attached to their family, be prepared to deal with them for the rest of your life.
The Sopranos
6.05 – Mr. & Mrs. John Sacrimoni Request…
The Bride: Allegra, a person, not an allergy medication
The Groom: Someone who doesn’t matter
The Wedding: New York boss Johnny Sack is granted a six-hour furlough from prison to attend his daughter’s nuptials. It’s quite an affair, which ends on an upsetting note when John is dragged away by federal Marshals. He cries in front of God and everyone, a sign of weakness to his friends.
The Lesson: Don’t be afraid to shed some tears – it’s an emotional day. And be thankful that the FBI (probably) isn’t on the guest list.
