Whether you’re a foodie, a gourmet, a gourmand, or just enjoy looking at pictures of food…you’ve come to the right place. The internet is bursting at the seams with delectable treats, and we’ve collected some of the best right here for you to enjoy.
FoodGawker
It’s exactly what it sounds like. An aggregate of many different food and recipe blogs, distilled down to a picture of the final product. You might be surprised at what catches your eye – pumpkin cake, roast beef, homemade root beer, or even goat curry. Discover foods you never knew existed by opening yourself up to their siren songs, and your taste buds will thank you.
Slashfood
A comprehensive blog of food-related news and articles, with everything from Obama’s tuna salad recipe to the latest label redesigns you’ll soon see on grocery store shelves. Particularly interesting are their summaries of the food articles that have shown up in major publications; from restaurant reviews to informative articles about eggplants, you’ll get all the best journalism without having to visit a million different websites.
Smitten Kitchen
Whether it’s simple comfort food like rice pudding or an unheard-of new dessert like Clementine cake, the Smitten Kitchen is sure to strike your fancy. Main dishes, breads, pastries, cookies…there’s no limit to what Deb can make (and photography beautifully). The ease with which she whips up wonderful foods makes a chickpea-based Moroccan stew seem as accessible as gingerbread. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT READ THIS BLOG WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY. You will find yourself putting aside all your other important tasks and falling into a cooking-related coma. You’ll regain consciousness elbow-deep in a bowl of batter, your nose dusted with flour, a timer going off somewhere…don’t let that happen to you.
The Pioneer Woman Cooks
If you’re sick of food snobbery and feeling like a hillbilly for using ketchup and condensed soup in your recipes, let me introduce you to the Pioneer Woman. The recipes range from soups to salsas to stuffed onions to deceptively simple steak tips, but they all share one thing in common: they please the same part of your palate that enjoys macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, and desserts that end in the word “crumble.” Reading this blog, you won’t feel bad for making questionable substitutions, forgetting steps, and making up your own semi-trashy recipes. After all, even the most gourmet of foods was developed by a peasant somewhere.
Zoe Bakes
By one of the authors of the revolutionary Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, this baking blog showcases all sorts of delectable treats. It’s a very bad thing to read if you’re on a diet, but that hasn’t stopped me so far. While you’ll find many of the recipes are what you might expect from a pastry chef, there are also lovely surprises like chocolate poached pears, candied grapefruit, and more. It’s the perfect blog for intermediate
bakers who want to expand their horizons with more exotic desserts, and maybe even – gasp – use fondant for the first time.
Cake Wrecks
You won’t learn anything from Cake Wrecks – except what not to do. And there is much to learn, young grasshopper. Ugly cakes of all kinds are featured here: badly made, badly decorated, badly spelled – and in some cases, just really badly thought-out. While the idea of the blog is to restrict mocking to “professional” bakers rather than well-intentioned amateurs, occasionally something will slip through – like Sandra Lee’s infamous “Kwanzaa Cake” that involves corn nuts as a garnish, and no actual baking whatsoever. Recently they’ve started featuring “Sunday Sweets,” particularly beautiful or intricate cakes that put the wrecks into proper perspective.
Lunch in a Box
Based on the Japanese concept of Bento, this blog features recipes, information, and ideas for packing the
sorts of fun, varied, and healthful lunches that lend themselves to being stuffed into cute little compartments and toted to work or school. As a kid who grew up loving the concept of Lunchables (but hating the taste), I would have really enjoyed this kind of thing. If you’re the sort of person who needs to take meals on the go, do yourself a favor and peruse Lunch in a Box.
