Oh yes, oh yes, fellow Romero fans–do I ever have spectacular news for you!
Though I’m loathe to give Ain’t It Cool News any kind of kudos at ALL, they did manage to sneak on (trespass?) the set of the upcoming George Romero movie, which apparently won’t be Diary of the Dead 2 so much as it will be a refination of the original Diary of the Dead.
I know that’s a concept that takes some explanation, so I’ll go ahead and give you the rundown. You remember that part where the RV full of college kids gets pulled over and robbed by the National Guard? Well, THEY’RE part of the new movie, and we’ll be following them around, along with the survivors of a zombie attack in Port Dover, a tourist town on the shores of Lake Erie with a large marina. Seems the folks of Port Dover missed their last ferry out of town, and thus, they’re stranded with a whole passel of zombies.
Which sounds a bit dicey at this point, in all honesty–unless Port Dover is on an island who CARES if the last ferry left? If they’re on the shore of Lake Erie and not on an island then they’ve either got all of Canada to their north or most of the continental US to their immediate south. There’s more than enough room to run to–frankly, the population density of the northeastern / extreme eastern Midwest is NOT that high and something like ninety percent of Canada’s population lives within one hundred miles of the US border so it’s not like you can’t get to the middle of nowhere lickety-damn-split from ANYWHERE in Canada.
But then, I suppose all that land mass WOULD be pretty much under non-stop zombie marauding, not to mention looters and such, so it would be a fairly dangerous proposition. Especially if there’s some kind of organized rescue effort on the other side of that ferry.
That and why am I worried? It’s ROMERO, doing an actual George Romero zombie flick! It wasn’t like Diary–like even LAND!–was anything less than half decent. Even those who didn’t like either must admit that it was better than a whole lot of other zombie movies. So there’s not much cause for concern at this point, and we can rest safe in the knowledge that, while he may not knock it out of the park every time, the chances that it will suck are relatively small.
