Persona 3 is a great game and all, but there’s room for expansion here. As long as I’m summoning creatures of myth and imagination out of the collective unconcious to serve as my personal bodyguards, there’s a few I want to be able to pick from.
Coyote – Coyote takes many roles, but he’s best known as a trickster. This essential archetype seems underrepresented in Persona 3, so you might as well start with the best.
Grendel – Admittedly somewhat overshadowed by his mother, but “Grendel’s Mom” doesn’t have quite the same recognizability to it. Plus, since nobody can seem to agree on just what he looks like, the artists get to draw him any way they want.
The Scarlet Woman – Because seriously that is some freaky stuff right there.
Enkidu – A wild man who goes around wrestling Sumerian god-kings for the heck of it and is tamed by a temple prostitute. I wouldn’t mind having him running around in my psyche.
The Fates – I’d like to see them done up maiden, mother and crone-style as they’re sometimes portrayed. For spellcasting, they could cut a thread.
Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü – This isn’t from classic mythology, so I’ll admit this is a stretch. Remember in Kung Fu Hustle when the old martial arts couple that ran the tenement introduced themselves as Romeo and Juliet? As you may have guessed, a joke was lost in translation. They actually called themselves Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü of the Condor Heroes books. They’ve got the same tragic lovers angle going, except they also kick tremendous amounts of ass.
On a side note, I’d love to know how the Mothman made it in to Persona 3, seeing as it’s a fairly obscure legend local to West Virginia. Maybe the Mothman is too awesome to be a purely domestic figure.
