You know, a lot of unpleasant things have been said about Scientology.
Allegations of mind control, embezzlement, and even death have swirled around the organization for years now, and show no signs of relenting. But when armed security guards shoot a guy out in front of their “celebrity center”, it definitely doesn’t help Scientology’s case one bit.
Now, to be fair–it’s not as though the guy in question was unarmed. Surveillance tapes and police records show him as carrying a pair of five-foot-long samurai swords. When a guy’s coming at you with a couple big-ass swords, there IS a reasonable threat there. But there’s a couple mitigating circumstances that make Camp Scilon look a bit…well…guilty.
One, there is some doubt as to whether the security critter that shot crazy sword man was actually, you know, LICENSED to carry a firearm.
Two, gun vs. sword…the security critter probably had a few other options before jumping right to “lethal violence”. There are things like “warning shot” or “disabling shot” that probably should’ve come up before “send the guy to the hospital where he dies from his injuries special attack”. He certainly would’ve had time before crazy sword guy’s sphere of influence came into play.
So, there’s a fair chance that Camp Scilon’s many lawyers will manage to weasel out of this–I will say though that if it WAS actual self defense I’m willing to accept it, though considering Scientology’s reputation I can’t say I’m willing to give them a lot in the way of benefit of the doubt. Especially considering some of their yield–Tom Cruise ring a bell?
