Slow summers are slow

Since the most exciting thing happening in video games today is the upcoming release of Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, here’s a roundup of some of today’s news items.

- You know how Mega Man games on the NES used to slow down and flicker when too much stuff started happening on the screen and the hardware got overwhelmed? Mega Man 9 is running on platforms that are a zillion times more powerful but still does that intentionally. Between that and the t-shirt, they’re really pushing this retro thing, but fortunately you an turn the effect off.

- California is the latest state to pay the Entertainment Software Association for passing an unconstitutional law on video games, to the tune of $280,000. The press release points out that this is just as the state budget is totally borked due to a $15 billion shortfall. Yeah, rub it in, guys.

- Fury is shutting down in the next 48 hours. Making an MMO isn’t always a ticket to riches if you’re getting meh reviews.

- So you liked Persona 3 and are thinking about trying Persona 2: Innocent Sin. Well, ha ha, you can’t, because unlike its sister game Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, it was never brought over to the U.S. However, a fan effort to totally translate the game is currently 98% done, so you might want to watch out for that.
