State of the WAC

No. 9 Boise State will clinch the conference title with a win in Reno against Nevada. The Broncos should be able to pull it off, but the Wolf Pack is leading all Football Bowl Subdivision teams in rushing yards per game with their spread-option offense. With the Pac-10 not being able to fullfil its bowl slots, look for bowl games to take Western Atheltic Conference teams as at-large bids. There COULD be up to six teams from this conference playing in the postseason.

  1. Boise State: The Broncos (10-0, 6-0 WAC) would be heading to the BCS as a non-conference buster in any other season, but the Utes are ahead of them in the standings. If Utah loses to BYU, BSU is in. And it very likely could happen, or, both teams MAY play in BCS games. The Broncos should, however, win out and roll to victories in Reno and at home in the finale against the (Fresno State) Bulldogs.
  2. Nevada: The Wolf Pack (6-4, 4-2) have an unstoppable rushing attack, but they have yet to face the 9th-ranked Broncos. Nevada could face a must-win situation in their finale against the (Louisiana Tech) Bulldogs.
  3. Louisiana Tech: The Bulldogs (6-4, 4-2) are the surprise team this year in the WAC and have an easy game against the (New Mexico State) Aggies before their showdown against the Wolf Pack.
  4. San Jose State: The Spartans (6-5, 4-3) were in first place just a few week’s ago until they were plagued with injuries. The Spartans are the first team in the FBS to finish their season (this Friday against Fresno on ESPN2) and must win to be assured a bowl game.
  5. Hawaii: The Warriors have not fared so well with the departure of Colt Brennan and June Jones and must win two of the next three to be assured a bowl game (the Hawaii Bowl). Lucky for them, they play the Vandals and Cougars first before finishing against the 19th-ranked Bearcats.
  6. Fresno State: The Bulldogs (6-4, 3-3) were considered the favorite to win this conference in the preseason, but like the Spartans, they have been plagued by injuries and now face a must-win game against the Spartans as they conclude their season against the Broncos on the road.
  7. New Mexico State: The Aggies (3-7, 1-5) were supposed to have improved off prior seasons, but it never happened. Their high-powered offense isn’t playing up to par and most likely won’t fare to well against the (La. Tech) Bulldogs this weekend.
  8. Utah State: The Aggies (2-9, 2-5) fired coach Brent Guy despite the team actually showing up in recent games againstĀ  the Bulldogs and Bulldogs. Doubt a new coach, however, will solve all problems next season.
  9. Idaho: The Vandals (2-9, 1-6) finally won a conference game. Their fans even rushed the field for it at the Kibbie Dome.
