The 40 Year Old Virgin was one of those surprise hits you never really see coming. A movie about a guy in his forties whose idea of a wild night is watching Survivor with his elderly neighbors who can’t get a date doesn’t immediately strike you as the kind of fodder for a movie that pulls in a hundred and seventy seven million dollars, and yet, this one did.

If you’ve seen him playing the egomaniac on The Daily Show, then you know that Steve Carell just might well know he was the impetus behind a movie that cleared way more cash than it had any right to.

Even the DVD commentary tracks make clear that The 40 Year Old Virgin was the direct result of a conversation between Judd Apatow and Steve Carell, and the original idea was Carell’s back from his days in The Second City.

Okay, Then Again, Maybe Not

The really nifty part is that Judd Apatow actually questioned the legitimacy of his writer’s credit. Why? Due simply to the sheer amount of improvised dialogue in the movie, Apatow began to wonder if he should be credited as a writer at all.
