TV Reruns to Head For Web–Probably A Bad Idea

Not for us, mind you–no, no, for us this coudn’t be better.  But where this concept poses a problem is to the networks themselves.

Just for some background, let me give you the rundown:

News Corp Coo Peter Chernin predicted Tuesday that eventually the Internet will be the place TV viewers will go for reruns. Speaking about the Hulu website which News Corp owns jointly with NBC, Chernin said, “I don’t necessarily look at Hulu as competitive with the broadcast networks.” Rather, he said, it’s an opportunity to replace the lost revenue that generally accompanies diminishing audiences for reruns. On the other hand, Chernin acknowledged that News Corp faces a new adversary in the form of user-generated video. “We live in a world of infinite choice,” he said. “Our job as programmers to make sure that our programming is compelling.”

This is, of course, a horrible idea as far as survival goes.  In an era where TV ad revenue is falling through the floor and more and more people migrate to the internet for their primary source of entertainment, how stupid is it to put your television shows on the very internet that’s killing you?

Like I said, this is GREAT for us regular people for the exact same reason it’s bad for networks.  And to spell it out:

WE NO LONGER NEED A TV. JUST A MONITOR.

Reason it out with me–if the primary source of entertainment is online, and all the programming is moving online, and even TV’s dumping everything but its newest program choices online, then why bother to watch TV?  Why bother to pay for cable or a dish or anything similar when, if you just wait a week or three, it goes to the internet?  I tell you this–if services like Hulu get much more extensive I will tell television where it can go and rot.

There may well come a day when any television programming you wish is available on demand, and the same with movies.  And when that day comes, it will be a glad day for me.

Until then, however, the TRIVIA you want is available on demand over at Kwanzoo.  Go ahead.  Demand some trivia.  I heard Arrested Development--okay, here it is, on demand!
