Ah, that magical 100th episode. All shows hope to get there someday, and the popular reality series Dancing with the Stars – based on the U.K. series Strictly Come Dancing – just passed the milestone this week.
R&B singer Mario, who is allegedly a celebrity, commemorated the event by being eliminated from the competition. Apparently, this Latin dancing prompted the judges to call his footwork “bloody ugly.”
This season of Dancing was the first that I watched with any regularity, because of the inclusion of my all-time favorite quasi-celebrity Adam Carolla. After his completely unfair elimination on the basis of mustache-and-unicycle discrimination, I gave up, but I always wondered whether it was fair to pit C-list actors against professional ice skaters and singers.
In that way, the elimination of Mario satisfied me somewhat. Take that, Jumpman!
According to an AP story, the 100th episode audience was filled with 100 fans of the show, plus many former winners and celebrities like Kelly Monaco, Jane Seymour, Vivica A. Fox, Jerry Springer, Mark Cuban, Drew Lachey, Ian Ziering, Sabrina Ryan and Lisa Rhinna. They also invited three former contestants to perform:
Fourth season winner Apolo Anton Ohno and fifth season runner-up Melanie Brown separately danced with their former professional partners during performances by Rascal Flatts. Third season runner-up Mario Lopez, who’s currently starring in “A Chorus Line” on Broadway, also performed a high-kicking routine with the cast from the musical revival.
