If nothing else, On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness takes the award for world’s most unlikely game.
In making Penny Arcade, Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins have always done whatever the hell they felt like doing, and it worked out pretty well for them. Not only do they stand astride the ziggurat of webcomics, holding a freshly plucked beating heart in each hand, they also hold a huge yearly convention to rival the old E3. They’re kind of a big deal, is the idea I’m trying to get across.
They’ve taken the same track when making their video game. It’s a grand experiment in seeing whether a video game with a target audience of two guys is commercially viable. And apparently the ideal game for these two involves turn-based combat and Lovecraft pastiches.
It’s not something that would ever be green-lit under any other circumstances, but on the whole, it’s probably less improbable than everything they’ve been successful at so far.
A demo for On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness is available for all platforms and on Xbox Live. I’m still downloading it.
