It’s December First, and that means two things. Firstly, Christmas is coming. Secondly, it’s my one-month anniversary. Only one of these things matters to you, though, so let’s get on with the Christmas movie stuff.
Remember when you were about twelve or thirteen and your parents started leaving you home alone without a babysitter or your grandma? Wasn’t it great? I think one of my main motivations for taking a babysitting
class was to demonstrate to my parents that I was ready to take care of myself. I hated babysitting. But all I wanted was to be home alone.
Those of you with one or more siblings might have missed this wonderful experience, and for that, I am truly sorry. You will heal. And part of that healing will be living vicariously through little Kevin McCallister.
In “Home Alone,” Kevin has about five brothers and sisters and a passle of other relatives stuffed into his house, all of them preparing for a trip to France to visit Kevin’s uncle. As the mostly-ignored youngest member of the family, Kevin feels persecuted and overlooked. He wishes his family would just disappear.
And then, they do.
A freak thunderstorm leaves everyone’s alarm clocks without power, and in the ensuing insanity, Kevin gets left behind in his solitary attic confinement. At first, he is elated to find that his family is gone, but he is soon frightened by the menacing old man with the snow shovel next door (whom Kevin’s older brother Buzz declared to be a murderer). Real danger soon rears its ugly head in the form of two robbers who become unnaturally obsessed with breaking into Kevin’s house, even when they find out that he’s home.
Kevin is able to prove to himself (and his family) his ability to pull it together and take care of himself and his house, along with discovering that the true meaning of Christmas involves putting up with your irritating family. Along the way, his family (or at least his mom) discovers that he really is priceless and that no one, not even the irritating Littlest One, should be taken for granted. What could be more festive than that?
