Webcomic “Last Blood” To Be a Movie

Since I was just complaining recently about how vampires don’t seem to be quite the cultural staple that they used to be, I’m sort of interested in this recent development. It turns out that Last Blood, a webcomic that is not to be confused with the upcoming HBO series True Blood, is going to be turned into a movie. For reals.

2007-01-17 - \Last Blood isn’t the kind of webcomic that features lonely nerds and anthropomorphic iPods; it’s a serious affair with a zombie apocalypse and people with shotguns and…uh…I only got to page eleven, because you have to load each page on its own and it’s slow going. But the art is pretty awesome and the story looks like it’s building up to something cool.

Apparently, the larger plot involves not only zombies, but vampires. Stay with me here.

Remember back when Spike first showed up on Buffy, and explained that – unlike some vampires – he didn’t actually want demons to take over the world? Because, once they did, all humans, which he fondly called “happy meals on legs,” would die out. He preferred to assimilate himself into human culture and occasionally feed on their sweet, sweet blood.

That’s kind of what this is about. The last few survivors of the zombie apocalypse – zompocalypse, if you will – band together with a group of vampires who protect them because they need the blood. I guess zombie blood is diseased or rotten or whatever.

Apparently, Family Guy exec producer David A. Goodman has been tapped to turn Last Blood into a film. He has other credits, too:

Goodman, repped by UTA and Benderspink, has an overall TV deal with 20th Century Fox. The Emmy-nominated writer-producer also has scripted an in-development remake of the 1978 comedy “Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?” for producer Eric Gold at Warner Bros.

Judging by the comic’s website, the writer has been talking about turning his story into a film since Day 1, so I’m sure this is very exciting news for everyone involved. I’m holding out hope that it actually turns out cool and awesome, because anything that has vampires and zombies certainly has a lot of potential.
