Weinstein Company Hemorraging Jobs–Not A Huge Surprise

Why, you ask?  Why is this not a huge surprise?

Why am I not even vaguely surprised that the Weinsteins are hemorraging jobs, dumping fully eleven percent of its total work force (cutting 24 out of 224 jobs)?

It’s because the Weinstein Company has routinely made a collection of horrible choices, and the chickens are coming home to roost.  Oh, sure, the chances of my ever getting a job with the Weinsteins might well now be nil, but the fact remains–they’ve bungled a LOT.

Here’s a rundown of the Weinsteins’ problems from horror-movies.ca, with my own commentary to follow:

TWC has been through a lot of rocky times with both it’s mainstream and horror movies as of late.  Less than stellar box office numbers, lower DVD sales, and detachment from MGM have really put the company through rocky times.  We have seen a result of some of those troubles here as horror fans with splitting the film Grindhouse into two seperate DVD’s to try and turn a little more profit, and a large crop of movies under their Dimension Extreme going straight-to-DVD.

Indeed, the Weinsteins have been responsible for a LOT of horror titles–stuff like 1408 did fairly well, but plenty of other titles got pounded at the box office.  Separating Grindhouse out into components Planet Terror and Death Proof was a particularly low blow to fans as mentioned above. And let’s face it; the Dimension Extreme segment of their business is at least a mixed bag.  Sure, they’ve got some solid pieces like Diary of the Dead and Automaton Transfusion, but there’s some crapola in there like Rogue and 13: Game of Death.

The question remains, however…is this only the beginning? Or is this the worst of it?  Only time will tell, sadly, but I can all too easily see things much worse.
