Unless you’re one of those rare breeds who doesn’t own a TV (or an antenna), you’ve probably logged a few hours kicking back, on the sofa, watchin’ some shows. It is – for the most part – harmless entertainment. Or even educational. At times, it can be a real treat. An amazing experience. Something to chat about, over which you can form bonds with other people. What’s not to love?

Do you prefer…REALITY?
Unscripted T.V. might not be what you call “realistic,” but there’s no denying that it’s a lot of fun. From game shows to paranormal investigators, unscripted shows offer an often-insightful peek into the lives of others. If you’re the sort of person who’s been on board with reality since Big Brother and Survivor first began plying their trade, then you can proudly call yourself a fan of the genre. (And let’s not argue about whether “The Hills” and its ilk should count. There are more important things to worry about.)

Do you prefer…FICTION?
Reality? Who needs it? You live in it! You’re the type of person who appreciates the thought and effort put into a good script, and it’s just not top-notch entertainment without one. Whether you prefer sitcoms or dramas, it’s all about the thrills that only scripted TV can provide. While you might occasionally tune in to Jeopardy or Millionaire, you’re really in it for the made-up stuff. For you, no real-life family could ever be as compelling as The Sopranos.

Are you…a SURFER?
If you watch TV purely for recreation, then maybe this is you. You’re much less likely to own shows on DVD, preferring to just watch “whatever’s on.” Maybe you’ll tune in especially for some big event, like the Grammies or the Olympics, but for the most part, you don’t let the TV schedule run your life. If you even bother to own a Tivo or DVR, it’s likely filled with a bunch of shows you won’t ever really watch.

Are you…a FANATIC?
If you could provide a dissertation on why Veronica Mars is really a classic noir piece, or give a brief synopsis of every Lost episode, then you are a TV fanatic. Chances are, you’ve got at least a handful of shows that you’re utterly obsessed with. And you don’t take those favorite shows lightly. You need to (or really want to) own every season on DVD, watch it when it’s on the air, and might even spend time blogging about it. Whether you’re nutty for just one show or several, this category is for you.

Are you…SERIOUS?
Some people like their entertainment with a splash of gravitas. Maybe you’re one of them. If you find yourself being more attracted to heavy dramas, such as The Shield, to the exclusion of light fare like sitcoms, then you’re a good candidate. For you, entertainment isn’t really entertaining unless you’re really being sucked in.

Are you…LIGHTHEARTED?
Maybe heavy dramas leave you feeling like you’ve been pummeled by a prize fighter. If that sounds familiar, then congrats! You’re the lighthearted type. A charming, simple comedy will do wonders to win you over. You don’t want to watch shows about miserable people doing miserable things; there’s enough of that in the world already. It’s all about being able to kick back, relax, and have a few laughs. It’s likely that a high-quality sitcom like That ’70s Show is just your cup of tea.

Are you..CLEAN CUT?
It can be hard to find family-friendly TV these days, but you’re one of those folks who is determined to keep trying. Whether because of strong moral convictions or because you always watch with your kids, finding a show that doesn’t resort to a lot of adult content is your top priority. You might be a little flexible when it comes to certain shows, but for the most part, anything past channel 13 is suspect. Most likely, you were one of those people who kept Seventh Heaven on the air for so many years.

Are you…OPENMINDED?
If the previous description made you wrinkle your nose, then you’re the Openminded type. You refuse to sacrifice entertainment in the name of “appropriateness.” Watching a network-edited version of your favorite premium cable show drives you berserk. For you, it’s all about authenticity and pulling no punches, and you find it’s impossible to accomplish either of those things while censoring content. Shelling out extra money every month for HBO and Showtime might hurt, but it’s still worth it! Dexter on CBS just isn’t the same, yet you can’t stand the advocacy groups who tried to take it off prime-time.
