What’s old is new again, for cheap and free

X-Com: UFO Defense is up for sale on Steam for a measely $4.50. If you’re interested in purchaseing one of the greatest strategy games of all time, then hop to.

If you’re the kind of person for whom a Jefferson is a huge deal, then maybe the release of Command & Conquer: Red Alert for free will catch your attention. The install process is convoluted as hell, and apparently requires you to burn the game to a CD before installing it back to your computer, but free is free.

Red Alert two disks, 500 megs each, which is like… half an hour on a modern broadband connection, if even that. God bless you, technology. I’m downloading it now so I can be reminded just how abysmally terrible I am at real time strategy games.

On a side note, looks like EA is going for full-on cheese with the actors for Red Alert 3. Virtually no games use actors anymore, but the campy cutscene is a Command & Conquer tradition. Tim Curry plays Premier Cherdenko and George Takai plays Emperor Yoshiro.

Of course, since they’re selling a Jenny McCarthy themeĀ for the 360 for actual real money, there’s an outside possibility they don’t see this as campy.
