YouTube–Victim of Its Own Success

When I was bombing around on the various Bloody-Disgusting blogs, looking for something to write about for the day’s blogging, I was amazed to stumble on something not so horror related.

This, of course, has most of your jaws dropping too–you mean he’s gonna talk about something that’s NOT about horror?, you’re likely saying in possibly mock shock–but what really got me was the title.

YouTube Irrelevant?

Now that one’s a mindblower, o my readership… go ahead.  Look at it a second–I even put it in bold in the center of its own line so you could just soak that sucker right in.  YouTube…juggernaut.  Launcher of careers.  Freaking cultural phenomenon… and it’s irrelevant?

Or at least in danger of becoming so.  And frankly, I see the logic and it is downright disturbing.

Everyone remember when cable TV got started?  A whole host of tiny little channels running a whole host of programs?  And it spiralled up from there as more and more players got involved.  We went from three major monolithic networks dropping the same handful of programs into our laps to anything and everything on demand.  And this is what’s looking like what’s happening to YouTube.  YouTube’s got everything and its mother–trying to find specifics gets harder and harder.

Want some scary stuff?  Hard to filter out the choice pieces from the random “boo!” jokes.  Funny?  Try separating actual comedy from the jackasses (no pun intended) throwing themselves off roofs and whatnot.  The sheer amount of videos on YouTube is making organization cumbersome, and thus, the stage is set for RomComYouTube.com or SplatterramaYouTube.com.  Or whatever your particular peccadillo may be.

Thriller, comedy, action...you’ll be able to find your choice of it on every other site but the bloated YouTube.  You’ll also, of course, be able to find trivia for them on Kwanzoo.
