1408: The Great King Renaissance Beginning?

For those of you who caught it, you know that 1408 was one evil room. And if Sam Jack himself comes out and tells you it’s an evil room, you can take it to the bank with a deposit slip and a withdrawal for payday that it is truly an evil room.

Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows….Is this room just as evil? Who knows…. Okay, fine. You want to be John Cusack and laugh at me and take my really really amazing antique scotch and go on up there anyway? Fine. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The Start of Something Big?

I won’t mince words here–I’m a King enthusiast and have been since I was roughly twelve. There was a new Stephen King miniseries roughly every May on ABC and I was there for it. It was great. For me it was summer’s opening day. Most people called it “Memorial Day”, but not me–Stephen King day on ABC was the time for me. “It”, “The Tommyknockers”, “The Stand”, “The Langoliers”…it didn’t matter. I was there for it.

A Sad End?

And then, after a while, Stephen King stopped showing up on ABC once a year. He started bouncing around from cable to ABC to even direct to video. It took me a surprising number of years to catch up with Rose Red. I saw Desperation for the first time on DVD. I missed the last episode of Nightmares and Dreamscapes. It hasn’t been good.

The Resurgence

And then, amazingly, out of nowhere came 1408. John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson got together to give us a fright fest the like of which we hadn’t seen since, well…arguably Secret Window, which was one of the last even vaguely King-based films in theaters. The resurgence actually managed to continue in the form of The Mist, one of Stephen King’s better stories from Skeleton Crew. This one is especially important as it reunites a King story with director Frank Darabond, who, as King enthusiasts will gleefully tell you, is a recipe for fantastic King movie.

The resurgence shows little sign of letting up–follow this link to a whole slew of upcoming King projects, including a whopping six for 2008.

And if you want to try your hand at our 1408 movie trivia, remember…that’s one evil room, but this one won’t keep you in it until you go insane, kill yourself or burn it down.
