2008 Emmy Nominations: Drama

As I will explain in further detail later, I really don’t do drama. Drama’s not my thing, and I seldom watch it. However, that doesn’t stop the Emmys from releasing a whole slew of nominations in this category, so I have to deal with it.

Bear with me.

Outstanding Drama Series

Boston Legal
Damages
Dexter
House
Lost
Mad Men

Let’s see now. I’ve seen maybe one or two episodes of Boston Legal, and it didn’t appeal to me in the least. I like James Spader and everything, but to watch him puff up like a sausage with each progressing season is very disturbing. He’s surpassed even William Shatner now, whose skin has looked ready to explode for decades. I can’t figure out if the show is supposed to be funny, but it’s not.

I had not heard of Damages until this list came out. Moving on!

Dexter. I do like Dexter, but it’s flawed, although the second season is definitely an improvement. Compared to most of the crap on T.V. nowadays, of course, it’s basically the best thing ever. So I support this nomination.

House is also a good show, although when I quit watching about two episodes into Season 3, its drama had never been very strong. The comedy was awesome, witty and clever and never a disappointment, but since so much of the drama involved patients who were played by inferior actors, it didn’t ring true for me. However, the show is technically a drama, so bravo.

I never got sucked into Lost, but a lot of people seem to like it, so I’ll allow it.

From what I’ve heard about Mad Men, it’s one of those shows that no one paid any attention to until the nominations. Kind of like Michael Clayton with the Oscars. I can neither confirm nor deny this.

I’ve rambled enough. Here are the episode nominations:

Boston Legal • The Mighty Rogues
Breaking Bad • Pilot
Damages • Pilot
House • House’s Head
Mad Men • Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (Pilot)

On account of not being able to afford cable T.V., I haven’t seen any of these episodes. However, from what I’ve heard, Mad Men is currently a favorite.

I’ll be happy if a few shows win that I’ve actually heard of. It’s tough, life without cable. Everything is fuzzy and there are about two channels to choose from. It’s like the ’80s all over again.

Take on me.

  1. Hi, i can accept your thoughts of people blowing up but when we do age, we do add a few pounds; speaking of someone over 50, I think James and William are wonderful looking. It’s all in the age honey

  2. Liz, I’m pretty much with you on that list–Dexter is the best of a bad lot. Note that Dexter was also the only premium cable show in that list, and so able to be seen without fear of FCC butchery. Ever notice how many of the BEST shows on TV come from premium cable channels where FCC meddling isn’t a factor?

  3. THE WIRE, you Emmy bastards.
