Bean Canned! Lord of the Rings Actor Busted on Domestic Assault

July 28th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

Sean Bean, ladies and gentlemen, star of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, joins the latest in a growing string of (two) actors busted for assaulting loved ones in England.  Bean was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault and questioned by London police for six hours after Bean’s new wife Georgina filed a complaint, claiming that Bean “assaulted” her during a fight at their London home.

Oddly enough, she later completely dropped the charges and claimed, loudly and vociferously and verbatim, that she was fine and Sean was fine and everything was blown out of proportion and THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM BETWEEN THEM.

“Saw V” Teaser: You’re Not in Church Choir Anymore

July 28th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

Okay, so the Saw V teaser trailer is out. In the grand tradition of Saw teasers, it reveals nothing but a single character in a trap. This time, though, the character is recognizable and possibly important to the plot. It’s Detective Something-or-other from Saw IV, better known as Luke from Gilmore Girls. He’s got his head in a box. Doesn’t look promising, but hey, Amanda got out!

Check it out for yourself:

Persona 3 mid-term report

July 28th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

Having put some time in on Persona 3: FES, I’m really liking this game more than I should.

The combat is simplistic and repetitive. The social sim is much the same. So how come I’ve logged 33 hours so far?

Miley Cyrus Must Never Be Allowed To Work A Camera Again. Ever.

July 28th, 2008 Steve Anderson 1 comment

So I get this regular burst of data from US Magazine, and today they actually sent me something worth talking about–Hannah Montana star and media juggernaut Miley Cyrus along with friend Mandy expanding into the Mean Girls market by making a small video briefly trashing Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.

Now, I don’t know who half these people are.  I know Miley because the media will NOT SHUT UP about this girl, but everyone else is beyond me.  I guess it’s because I’m not fifteen and a girl.  But I’m not here to talk about the intricate dance of backstage politics over who’s going to become the next Disney megastar or who’s dating something called the Jonas Brothers or anything like that. No sir!

’90s T.V.: Not as Good as You Remember

July 27th, 2008 Liz N. 1 comment

Nostalgia is a cruel mistress. It’s no secret to most of us that things we remember fondly from childhood aren’t nearly as good as we thought they were; after months spent tracking down an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark that I found terrifying and life-changing as a child, I couldn’t even force my adult self to sit through more than five minutes of the horrible acting and dialogue.

It’s a shame, but we’re far from alone.

Horror Directors Head for Xbox Live–Cautious Optimism Is Warranted

July 27th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

This is a strange and altogether interesting turn of events, folks…and definitely something we need to keep our eyes firmly wedged upon.

Microsoft, it seems, is getting into the filmmaking business, and this bodes strangely for us all.  They’ve recruited some modern-day heavies–no “Masters of Horror”, sadly, but still big names–to create a series of short films exclusively for Xbox Live.  Microsoft’s CEO announced to the London Financial Times recently that the directors–specifically, Darren Bousman, Zack Snyder and Andrew Douglas–would have complete creative control over the films.

Like I said in the headline, I think we have room to be cautiously optimistic.  Microsoft getting into the short film / indie film game is an interesting development, and Xbox Live is a fantastic delivery medium, sure enough.  But couldn’t we have gotten anyone better to do the films?  Oh, sure, I liked the new Amityville Horror well enough, so Andrew Douglas is cool.  But Darren Bousman is pretty much responsible only for flogging the Saw dead horse and Zack Snyder utterly bungled Dawn of the Dead.  What, John Carpenter wouldn’t get on board?  Mick Garris?  Maybe a little Stephen King action?  Still waiting on season two of Nightmares and Dreamscapes, TNT! Get off the dime!

The Barrage of Plastic Instruments

July 27th, 2008 Anna Peterson No comments

Ion Drum RockerThe latest trend of musical games brings with it a variety of instrument perpetual for every console. I’m not sure about the rest of the gaming community, but my living room is already looking crowded.

The split between Guitar Hero and Rock Band means two new music themed games being created simultaneously, Guitar Hero IV and Rock Band 2. Luckily, it was announced recently that the original Rock Band instruments work for not only the sequel, but for Guitar Hero IV as well. Even without the need for new peripherals, there are a plethora of new options popping up in anticipation of the Guitar Hero IV and Rock Band 2.

World’s Best DVD Covers

July 27th, 2008 Liz N. 2 comments

As fun as it might be to mock the bad things in life, sometimes you just have to step back and appreciate the good. In light of that, I’d like to counter my own “World’s Worst DVD Covers” article with this: a celebration of some of the best DVD cover art that I, personally, have ever seen.

Once again, I am limiting my choices to those found online. Also, and perhaps most importantly, I am excluding all Criterion DVDs. I’m reasonably sure that Criterion keeps a team of artists locked in their basement, working feverishly day and night, to produce all the beautiful and creative covers those guys always slap on their DVDs. It’s really not fair to compare their work to that of a harried graphic artist who barely has time to apply the right filters in Photoshop before he must go on to the next project.

Another Robocop Movie??

July 26th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

The inner child in me is poinging wildly out of control, and it has absolutely nothing to do with its traditional morning breakfast of chocolate cake and maple syrup.  No, this little bastard, so clearly in need of Ritalin, is resonating like an overtuned guitar string on the recent news that there will be another Robocop film.

This time helmed by Darren Aronofsky of Pi and Requiem for a Dream, the newest installment of Robocop is said to be “noirish”, and is the first new Robocop release in fifteen years, not counting series television and direct to video filmmaking.  Its scheduled release date?  Some time in 2010.

The Long Tail?

July 26th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

We’ve talked about the Long Tail before. In a nutshell, the Internet makes more creative works available to more people and frees us from the tyranny of the blockbuster.

So here’s Long Tails and Big Heads: Why Chris Anderson’s theory of the digital world might be all wrong, a Slate article recapping an argument that, well, it’s all wrong.
