Buy a Walk-On Role in Spider-Man 4. Really.

Yeah, I don’t know quite what to make of this either. But let’s begin at the beginning.

You may have seen celebrities participating in the “Stand Up To Cancer” ad campaign recently. While I think we can all fully support research and development in the cancer area, I find the theme of the ads a little insulting. They’re always like “IT’S TIME TO STAND UP TO CANCER ALREADY. COME ON GUYS. LET’S DO IT.” As if we’ve been completely ignoring cancer for the past thirty years.

In any case, Stand Up to Cancer is holding an auction on - where else? - eBay, and the winner of that auction will be entitled to a SPIDER-MAN 4 VIP EXPERIENCE!

What to Watch: Week of Sept. 1st

Wow, how long has it been since a month started on a Monday? (Don’t look that up, I don’t really want to know.) This upcoming week has some cool stuff on T.V., so here’s a few of the highlights:

On Monday, tune to Lifetime (I know, I know!) at 9:00 PM EST for The Matador. Starring Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear, this is the sort of film you will definitely enjoy the first time around, but probably won’t ever want to own. So this is perfect. The story revolves around a mild-mannered businessman who becomes entangled with a foul-mouthed, washed-up assassin. (Guess who plays who.)

If that’s not quite your style, AMC is showing the Clint Eastwood classic Dirty Harry at 8:00.

Barack Osimbama–The Lion King of Illinois Politics

Taking a page from Liz’s book, who boldly strode forth to prove that we could in fact link television trivia to major political-type maneuverings, I’m gonna go ahead and stab out at politics.

And since Liz has been so nice as to target herself at the Republicans, I guess it falls to me to handle the Democrats, and their downright messianic candidate, Barack Obama.

At Least They’re Starting To Try With Saw V

So Lions Gate and Twisted have finally put out a poster for Saw V that approaches scary.  It was a bad sign when the poster promoting the corresponding blood drive was scarier than the poster for the movie itself, but it seems like they’re at least trying to get their act together ahead of the release, but is it a case of too little, too late?

I found the poster out at horror-movies.ca, and it’s definitely a step up from the poster that we originally had, with that ridiculous fake face-mask…but we’re less than two months from the release.

Mark your calendars: Video game releases

Fall may be a traditionally pre-holiday slump for video game releases, but there’s still plenty of good stuff on the near horizon. Here’s what’s coming out.

Spore is coming out September 7, and is already available for pre-loading on the online store. Another EA title, Mercenaries 2, lands today and is already on store shelves.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky was supposed to come out on the fifth, but is currently being recalled. Apparently all of the boxes accidently went out without CD keys. So, will the digital copy on Steam be pushed back as well? I guess we’ll see.

Heidi Montag is Totally Pure

It’s strange how, in the entertainment industry, virginity can be such a hot commodity.

Remember when Britney Spears claimed to be a virgin? And Jessica Simpson? Despite their highly sexualized images, they still felt that it was Very Important to be Good Role Models for Little Girls. And that meant staying pure before marriage, even while wearing Daisy Dukes and singing “hit me baby one more time.”

Of course, if you actually believe that they were virgins on their wedding days, then you, no offense, are extremely gullible. I guess you could make the case that it doesn’t matter, as long as they’re talking the talk. But it loses some impact when “virginity” becomes separated from “chastity,” which is, really, the entire point.

Upcoming Fable Sequel

October brings with it the sequel to the popular Fable game, Fable 2. Fable and its sequel are developed by Lionhead Studios, developer of the Black & White series of games. It’s been four years since the release of the original Fable on the Xbox and the new features sound very promising. The original was a marvel of game design where every player shaped their own game world. Fable 2 will feature the good vs evil game choices with even more unique features added on top. [Read more →]

They’re Here: Poltergeist Remake Marches On

You don’t need to be a horror fan to realize that movies like Poltergeist, Dawn of the Dead, Psycho, and Halloween are classics of their genre. Nobody in their right mind would think of remaking a classic drama like Casablanca, but classic horror seems to be up for grabs.

Poltergeist, Dawn of the Dead, Psycho, and Halloween: they’re not just four horror classics, they’re also fair game for remakes. Three of them already have been, and one’s about to. Haven’t heard of the Poltergeist redo? Well, you will soon. Director Vadim Perelman, who helmed the critically acclaimed House of Sand and Fog, is in “heavy talks” to direct.

What you and I are missing at PAX ‘08

So, the Penny Arcade Expo sounds like a pretty awesome thing this year.

For starters, Jonathan Coulton did a live duet of “Still Alive” aka “The Portal Song” with Felicia Day of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It starts at 2:00 in the video. That’s like… some kind of nerdvana. A nerdgasm, even.

Apparently Someone Listens When I Talk. Sort Of.

Brace yourselves for at least a moderate dose of good news, kiddies, because while there’s going to be a sequel to Rob Zombie’s execrable Halloween title, it will NOT involve Rob Zombie.

This round of Halloween will be directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, who were apparently attached to direct the remake of Hellraiser.  While that one’s sort of up in the air right now, at least last time I heard any news about it, I find it interesting that they’re moving on.  Sort of cements the concept that the Hellraiser remake is tanking a bit.
