“Star Trek: The Experience” Will Be Assimilated

August 30th, 2008 Liz N. 1 comment

Monday, September 1st will be a sad day for Trekkies everywhere (or, as they often prefer to be called, Trekkers). Star Trek: The Experience, a themed attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton, is closing permanently on that day.

Featuring two themed rides and a Star Trek museum, The Experience also offered ceremonies like weddings and vow renewals (and, one presumes, baptisms and bar mitvahs). A couple from Pennsylvania traveled all the way to Vegas in the attraction’s last days so they could celebrate their 10th anniversary four years early, before The Experience shut down.

Metallix TD

August 30th, 2008 Anna Peterson No comments

I recently discovered a new flash game called Metallix TD. It takes the tower defense gameplay from Warcraft III and makes it into a short, easily, and assessable game that can be played in any browser. It turns what Warcraft III players have been spending days on into a casual flash game. Read more…

How Are The Big Cable Networks Like A Neutered Dog?

August 30th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

The answer: Neither has any balls.

Not so long ago–about two years ago, in fact, Showtime started showing installments of the short-lived series Masters of Horror.  All was going fine and hunky-dory until Takashi Miike showed up with his copy of Imprint and suddenly Showtime, which had been one of the only places left you could see PG-13 movies on television unedited, blanched at the thought of showing it on their precious airwaves.  The word that I got from TV.com as to reasons goes as follows: Read more…

Vice President Cougar: John McCain is a Crazy Genius

August 30th, 2008 Liz N. 2 comments

I’m supposed to be writing about celebrities, not politics - but in this election particularly, it seems like celebrity has become at least as much of a hot-button issue as abortion. Accusations of being a celebrity are flung wildly even as candidates try their best to sell themselves - which is exactly what celebrities do.

Sure, they have a pretty short shelf life, but so do reality T.V. stars. Nobody would begrudge them their fifteen minutes.

An interview with James Urbaniak of The Venture Bros.

August 30th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 3 comments

Kwanzoo: I want to preface this by saying I feel a little guilty because even though you’re a respected dramatic actor, I’m mostly going to ask you about your work as a cartoon scientist.

Urbaniak: I’m proud of my work as a cartoon scientist. Ask away!

The Best Part Is, This Actually Exists

August 29th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

Ninjas versus Pirates.  Call it an overused meme if you must, and by the time you get robots involved, things only get stranger and more interesting.  But when you introduce zombies into the mix, well, it’s a downright unstoppable combination.  Which is why I was downright amazed to discover this.

It’s Ninjas versus Zombies, folks.  And by the look of things, they’re playing it straight…kind of.  Check out the plot synopsis from horror-movies.ca: Read more…

Countdown to Quantum: Thunderball

August 29th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

As you (should) know, Bond 22, Quantum of Solace, is coming out this November 14th. In honor of this momentous occasion, I have decided to spend a little time each week digging into my Bond DVD collection and talking about the best and worst of the series up until now. I also like to compare the movies to the source material, when it exists. I find all of this very entertaining, but if you don’t, the scroll button is still right over there. >>>>>

Thunderball is one of the stranger James Bond books. Author Ian Fleming liked trying out new formulas, and in this one, he decided to throw Bond out of his element a little. In the beginning, he has Bond’s boss M taking a personal interest in the agent’s health. He then sends Bond off to Shrublands, a health clinic from the era when “free radicals” were considered to be the ultimate threat to one’s well-being.

Video game news roundup

August 29th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

- Here’s a puzzling one: Brett Ratner, director of Rush Hour and X-Men: The Last Stand says he’d like to make a Guitar Hero movie.

It could be about a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the Guitar Hero competition. One of these dreams-[come-true] kind of concepts.

2008 NCAA Football Season Kickoff: Oregon State vs. Stanford

August 29th, 2008 Matthew Kimel No comments

opening dayThe 2008 NCAA football season began this Thursday night, and I happened to be at Stanford Stadium to catch the Stanford Cardinal upset the Oregon State Beavers 36-28 in an epic battle that was not decided until the final minute when Beavers’ Darrell Catchings fumbled the ball just before crossing the plane of the goal line.

If Catchings had scored, the Beavers would have been down by two points, and had attempted their second two point conversation in the forth quarter to try to send the game in to overtime.
