October 29th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

Anyone looking for a bit of perspective on the whole Saw franchise–as well as anyone possibly interested in pitching a movie in this age of poor economic data–might well be interested in going here.

Kwanzooween: Classic Horror

October 29th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

It’s Halloween, Kwanzoo style.

In order to fully appreciate horror movies, you’ve got to see where it all began. Some of the most effectively scary movies were made on shoestring budgets, back before special effects could be computer-enhanced. It’s important to enjoy and appreciate these classics, because no matter how hard some people try to emulate them, we’ll never have that era of horror again.

Lions Gate Branches Out Into Comics

October 29th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

An interesting move from Lions Gate wends its way to us this week and shows us, conclusively, that Lions Gate has a committment to milking its archive for all its worth.

Seems that they’re looking to start a line of comic books around some of their long-running titles, early titles to include Leprechaun and Warlock. No word if they’ll be taking the obvious step and turning Saw into a comic.

NCAA: Week 9 AP Top-5 update

October 28th, 2008 Matthew Kimel No comments

No. 1- Texas has built up quite an impressive resume, so it’s no wonder that they are No. 1 in both the AP polls and BCS standings. The Longhorns have beat ranked teams for three consecutive weeks and there’s no doubt that they could do it against this week when they play interstate rival No. 7 Texas Tech on the road.

No. 2- Alabama, as is Texas, is 8-0 but has not had as tough of a schedule as the Longhorns thus far. The Crimson Tide will face Arkansas State this weekend and need to make sure they don’t look ahead to their game next week at No. 19 LSU.

The Dead Space family tree

October 28th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

Some time ago, a development team at EA Redwood Shores was like “Hey, remember System Shock 2 by Irrational Games, the cult classic that blended action and RPG elements with a survival horror experience? Let’s remake that, but with upgraded graphics and streamlined gameplay, eliminating some of the flaws that plagued the original!”

That’s conjecture, of course, but it’s hard to ignore the similarities between Dead Space and SS2, especially since Irrational had an identical conversation and released their own spiritual sequel, Bioshock, last year.

True Blood: “The Fourth Man in the Fire” 10/26

October 28th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

Well, last week’s “True Blood” ended with the implication that Bill died in a fire. Not “died” exactly, but, whatever vampires do. Vaporized. Anyone with half an idea of how T.V. shows work could probably guess there was some kind of surprise twist to explain why there were four coffins in the fire, instead of the three that it should have been if Bill wasn’t there.

This week we found out the truth.

Prince of Persia home movies

October 28th, 2008 Matthew Boyd No comments

Most gamers are familiar with Prince of Persia, even if it’s just from the terrific 2003 Sands of Time spinoff or the not-quite-as-terrific sequels. The franchise, of course, originally started in 1989 with the classic PC game, known for its buttery-smooth character animation.

Creator Jordan Mechner based the animation on video he took of his kid brother running around. He recently uploaded a copy of the video from his first photo shoot, now over 20 years old. The video is after the jump.
