Black Friday Rule: THE BEST DVDS.

November 27th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

I have in my hand a list of names the Black Friday ads for this year.. It’s not all that exciting, since scans of them showed up online weeks ago, but let’s pretend it’s 1992 and we’re all looking at this for the Very First Time.

I wouldn’t recommend heading out on Friday just for DVDs, since the deals aren’t that fantastic and DVDs go on sale all the time. But if you’re going to be hitting some of the major stores anyway, first of all, you’re insane. Second of all, here are the DVDs you should buy.

If you’re ready to brave the post-Thanksgiving crowds tomorrow, you’ll find some deals waiting for you on the video game front. You know… when you’re buying gifts for other people. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Fortunately, Destructoid has already done all the hard work and has compiled a list of Friday’s deals. Here’s some of the highlights.

Theatres Giving Thanks For This Weekend

November 27th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

Most reports suggest that this weekend is going to be a much-needed financial shot in the arm for the theatres, and for a panoply of reasons.

The first, of course, is that most everyone’s got at least some time off here.  Thursday, a federal holiday, is mostly a given for any business that doesn’t want to show up in the newspapers.  The only real exceptions here are emergency services, infrastructure things like the power company, or retail.  Friday is less of a given–people used to talk about how some big name or another–possibly Milken or Boesky–used to make people show up on the day after Thanksgiving, not do so himself, but call the office on a semi-hourly basis to make sure people showed up.  So basically, most everybody’s got either a four-day weekend or a modified three-day, and since the shopping is going to be like DEATH if you believe CNN’s relentless pronouncements, it means people are going to be stuffed full of turkey and not too interested in anything requiring either moving a lot or spending money.

Over the Kwanzoo and Through the Woods: “Hannah and Her Sisters”

November 27th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

Thanksgiving is here! And yes, I know that “Over the River and Through the Woods” is not necessarily a Thanksgiving song, but it doesn’t mention Christmas, so by default it must be. Also I am pretty sure it refers to pumpkin pie. And yes, there are actually some Thanksgiving movies. If you find yourself lacking in holiday spirit, pop in one of these DVDs and bask in the holiday tradition.

“Hannah and Her Sisters” is one of those movies that has everyone. Within the first half hour, you’ll spot Woody Allen, of course - he directed it, after all - John Turturro, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Sam Waterston, Carrie Fisher, Mia Farrow, and even Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter. The one who grew up to marry Woody Allen. Yeah, that’s perfectly normal.

Horror May Be Dying…But the Internet Provides.

November 26th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

So I was watching CNN tonight–I’m crazy about CNN, really–and they had that Eric character from Google on.  He was talking about how the Internet is becoming more and more a part of people’s lives

But this isn’t a business blog, so you KNOW I’m gonna link movies to this somehow.  And how I’m going to do it is via the simple and joyful expedient of horror film.

Know Your Role: DPS and Crowd Control

November 26th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 3 comments

The last leg of the MMO trinity, the damage dealer, has a simpler job than the tanks or the healers. They do as much damage per second as possible to whoever the bad guy is.

But they have one other important job, and I want you yahoos in pickup groups to pay attention to this: DO NOT STAB THE SHEEP.

“The Real Ghostbusters” Complete DVD Set

November 26th, 2008 Liz N. No comments

’80s nostalgia has never been bigger than it is now. Those of us who grew up on T.V. from the Reagan era have now become part of the buying public, and we love to spend money on things that remind us of the good old days.

LIKE GHOSTBUSTERS.

Maybe The Master Plan Isn’t The Way To Go

November 26th, 2008 Steve Anderson No comments

We’ve seen it with Twilight, and with most of the studios’ planned releases for the next three months or more–it’s sequels and remakes until things get better, and everything else can go hang.

But the recent and shocking success of Slumdog Millionaire in theatres is putting a bit of a wrench in that operation, and with very good reason–it’s a good, original movie that people want to see.

A Conversation With Felicia Day

November 26th, 2008 Matthew Boyd 12 comments

Kwanzoo: We’re here with Felicia Day of The Guild. Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself to begin with?

Felicia Day: Well, I’m an actor and a writer, I’ve worked on many television shows and movies as an actor, but lately I’ve become known for the work I’ve done on the web, including acting in Joss Whedon’s “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” and creating a web show called “The Guild”.
