30 Rock: “The One with the Cast of Night Court”
Given that “30 Rock” needs desperately to expand its audience - that is, unless it wants to get canceled - they’re really not bringing out their A-game the way you might expect. I’m sure that this episode is very very funny if you are a Night Court fan, but if you haven’t seen it, the B plot won’t be of any interest to you.
The A plot is kinda funny, but it relies heavily on Jennifer Aniston rather than our beloved protagonist Liz. She plays Claire, Liz’s former roommate from Chicago, who is fun-loving to the point of exhaustion. Also, she is as destructive to men as she is seductive - something Jack very quickly learns.
Initially reluctant to go out clubbing with her over-energetic friend, Liz finally agrees, just to keep Claire away from Jack. Her cunning plan doesn’t work, and soon it’s up to Jack to extricate himself from a crazy woman’s clutches.
Meanwhile, Kenneth is upset that the page uniform has changed. For some reason, this leads to him and Tracy reuniting three key cast members from Night Court to film a wedding scene that apparently should have been in the series. I don’t know. This part really is just for Night Court fans.
There are some laughs to be had, but this is nowhere near the level of the first two seasons. Why can’t a show just pick a level of quality and stay there? Why does everything have to be a disappointment? I’m starting to get irritated with TV in general, because it keeps doing this to me. I find a great show that I’m into, then the new season comes on the air and it’s just not the same.
If things continue the way they’ve been going, “30 Rock” is going to be canceled at the end of this season. Possibly sooner. No one was watching when it was great, and they’re sure as heck not going to start watching now that it’s mediocre.
I just don’t understand what happened. Did the one good writer leave? Did Tina Fey lose her mind? Whatever it is, they’d better fix it, and fast.
