An unusually game-savvy judge rules on Activision-Blizzard merger
Kotaku has a great article up about a judge’s ruling on “Wayne County Employees’ Retirement System seeking an injunction against the Activision-Blizzard merger”. In the ruling, Judge William B. Chandler III used Blizzard’s game World of Warcraft as a metaphor.
In some ways, perhaps, the world of Mergers and Acquisitions is a massively multiplayer role playing game as well. Like in World of Warcraft and other games, the participants in the M&A field take on certain roles, interact in their own community, hone specialized skills, and even develop a unique, somewhat curious vernacular. One particular quest in the world of M&A is disclosure litigation. In the instance of disclosure litigation presently pending before this Court, the world of M&A meets the World of Warcraft.
I know a lot more about World of Warcraft than I do about mergers and acquisitions law, but… that’s actually a surprisingly apt comparison, especially coming from a guy with white hair. The judge also turned down the injunction for reasons that are beyond my ken.
But hang on, why is the Wayne County Employee’s Retirement System seeking an injunction against two video game companies? As seen in an earlier story, the retirement system is a shareholder in Activision, and are suing because they think it gives them a bum deal.
