Another Robocop Movie??

The inner child in me is poinging wildly out of control, and it has absolutely nothing to do with its traditional morning breakfast of chocolate cake and maple syrup.  No, this little bastard, so clearly in need of Ritalin, is resonating like an overtuned guitar string on the recent news that there will be another Robocop film.

This time helmed by Darren Aronofsky of Pi and Requiem for a Dream, the newest installment of Robocop is said to be “noirish”, and is the first new Robocop release in fifteen years, not counting series television and direct to video filmmaking.  Its scheduled release date?  Some time in 2010.

Seriously, I couldn’t be happier.  I grew up on Robocop.  I remember the cartoon, the television series, the various Ocean video games, the ARCADE game, for crying out loud.  I remember the barely functional ED-209, I remember how great it was that Dick got fired at the worst possible moment, I remember the Fourth Directive. I remember the drug-addled UltraRobocop, I remember “BEHAVE YOURSELVES!”.

And I remember that, no matter how many shots Robocop’s Auto 9 cracked off, he absolutely NEVER needed to be seen bothering with anything so tedious as reloading.

See, I’ve been fond of Robocop for years.  One of my earliest movie memories was piling into my dad’s pickup for the nine o’ clock showing of Robocop 2 as a little boy and driving off into town, coming home around eleven, spectacularly late to a boy my age, and not telling Mom.  So Dad, if you’re reading this, apologies for just now telling Mom.  Especially if she’s reading this too.

And so, it’s great to see one of my old childhood friends, fifteen years departed, brought back to clanking, whirring, gun-blazing life by no less a personage than Darren Aronofsky.  There may be plenty of other science fiction out there, and plenty of sci-fi trivia, but for me, Robocop was the first and the best.
