Assassination of a High School President
Originally titled The Sophomore, Assassination of a High School President has found new life with a snappier name. It’s a good title all around. It evokes the seriousness of death and conspiracy, while simultaneously poking fun at the structure of high school politics. Kids take themselves so seriously. High school students are the worst culprits.
Assassination was one of the standout hits at Sundance, using the co-starring Mischa Barton as a major draw. Some critics liked it and others didn’t, but all acknowledged the movie’s strengths.
When Catholic school journalist Bobby Funke (presumably of no relation to Tobias, and played by Reece Thompson) does some digging into the Mystery of the Missing SAT Papers, the finger points to the student body president. Unlike most film heroes, Funke is initially lauded for his findings and wins a journalism scholarship to Northwestern - not to mention the president’s ex (Barton, of course).
But just as Northwestern calls for a deeper investigation of the case, Funke begins to uncover new evidence that may throw everything off balance. But he won’t be discouraged…
As of yet, there is no word of when this will reach our hometown theaters - but given the high-school setting and the appearance of Bruce Willis as a crazy principal, I’m sure it won’t be long.
