When Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery first slid onto screens, audiences reacted generally positively. But little did they know a plot much more insidious than anything Dr. Evil could have come up with lay waiting in the wings for them–a truly Hollywood plot.

Let’s all agree by general consent that, if you’re into comedy, the first Austin Powers title was a pretty groovy idea. Like Get Smart to the Nth degree, this was the most insane kind of parody helmed by a funny man who knew from funny, and got the job done. Actually, he got several jobs done, playing both the bad guy and the good guy all at once and playing them extremely well.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me–Wearing Out Its Welcome

This is where the series began to lose steam. Bringing in Heather Graham had its pluses–Rollergirl can make just about anything watchable. And they tried some nifty choreography–that opening hotel bit was a laugh riot. But it was the same jokes as the first Austin Powers only done in reverse.

Austin Powers in Goldmember–And the Fish Goes Bad

Talking about Goldmember is just downright painful. Thoroughly forgettable, thoroughly unpleasant, all the good jokes now flogged dead horses, new characters introduced in an attempt to keep things moving…oof.

He Never Knew When To Quit

Which is Hollywood’s problem in a nutshell–it just plain doesn’t know when to quit. Gratefully, you don’t hear much talk about a fourth Austin Powers.
