The 2008 NFL season is officially in the books.
In a way, this year was just like every other year, and in others, it was a year like none other.

Troy Polamolu returned one of Kurt Warner’s four interceptions for a touchdown and Willie Parker winged past the Cardinals for 135 yards on the ground and two scores as the Pittsburgh Steelers won their record-breaking sixth Super Bowl 31-14 over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday in Tampa.
Super Bowl XLIII was as lopsided as predicted. The favored Steelers dominated the Cardinals on both sides of the ball and two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner was a non-factor throughout the game, completing just 20 of 44 passes for 195 yards.

I’m struggling to come up with legitimate reasons why the Arizona Cardinals could win the Super Bowl this year. All I’ve got: they have gotten lucky every step of the way and, maybe, just maybe, they could get lucky one more time.
On the other hand, I have begun to compile endless reasons why the Steelers will win the Super Bowl, other than the fact that they have the best scoring defense (giving up just under 14 points per game in the regular season) and gave up the least yards per game, the least passing yards per game and the second least rushing yards in 2008.

Prior to the start of the season, I (and many others) thought the Pittsburgh Steelers had the toughest schedule of all NFL teams. Boy, was I wrong. The Steelers and those terrible towels are now headed to Tampa to play in the Super Bowl.

It was a year full of ironic moments - New England’s Tom Brady got knocked out in his team’s first game, San Diego made an 8-8 playoff run, and Baltimore’s rookie quarterback Joe Flacco led his team to the AFC Championship. So, it makes perfect sense that the Arizona Cardinals will be playing in the Super Bowl, I guess.
Actually, it doesn’t. Not at all. No matter how many times I say it, it just doesn’t sound right in my mind.

Ok, I’ll admit it: My NFL playoff predictions have been, well, embarrassing and far from correct at times the last two weeks. But I’m not the only one who has been off. At least, unlike the ESPN Sports Guy, I had a winner last week!
Just how bad have I been in the playoffs? I’m 2-2 on the AFC side of the bracket and a miserable 1-3 on the NFC. So, by backtracking and analyzing my picks, I’ve come to a few realizations. I know absolutely nothing about the Cardinals - not like you did either - and I have been dead on the money about the Ravens. Continuing on that track, I’m going to put my best foot forward, let’s take a look at the AFC Championship Game first.

At the start of the college football season, 119 teams all had a chance to win the BCS National Title, right? Well, that is, of course, if you believe that the BCS is a fair system that gives each team an equal opportunity to win it. Hello? Utah, anybody?
While I did indeed select Florida as my preseason pick to win the National Title, I’m not so certain that it did indeed deserve the honor. Though Florida did win the National Title Game, win (arguably) the best conference in the Football Bowl Subdivision and defeat six ranked-at-the-time opponents, it had one thing Utah didn’t - a loss on its resume.

Call it bizarre, unpredictable or the weekend of the dogs - maybe you could even call it football. But, three of the top four seeded NFL teams got knocked out of the playoffs this weekend with home field advantage and a week off to prepare in their favor.
Next Sunday Pittsburgh will host Baltimore - the Steelers have already beat the Ravens twice this season - and Philadelphia will travel on the road for the third straight week to square off against the Cardinals - a rematch of a game which the Eagles soared to a 48-20 romp several week’s ago. Let’s take a look at what went wrong for who…

Do these matchups sound familiar to you? Well, they should. All four games this weekend are rematches of games that have already been played during the regular season at least once.
So what makes Saturday and Sunday’s showdowns so special? Duh! The winners go to their conference championship with a chance to play in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. I’m siding with the road teams in the AFC and the home teams in the NFC. As of now, I like the Ravens to play the Giants in the Super Bowl since the Colts got knocked out last weekend. On to the predictions…
