Bateman Says “Arrested Development” Maybe a Movie?

Yeah, like that’s news.

Ever since the cult classic series Arrested Development was canceled, people have been talking about the possibility of a movie. People always do. They did it with Futurama (and it eventually became real). Same story with Firefly. They did it with Family Guy (and the series returned instead). They did it with The Sopranos (YOU THOUGHT I WOULDN’T MENTION IT? YOU WERE WRONG!), despite the fact that show creator David Chase made it abundantly clear that it would never happen.

Recently, on Countdown with Keith Olberman, said: “it’s in the works. The grown-ups are trying to work out the numbers.”

He’s not the only cast member who’s been continually reassuring fans, though. Back in May, Alia Shawkat recounted: “I got a call from Mitchell Hurwitz, the creator, and he said ’so have you heard about this movie we’re supposedly doing?’ and I said yes. And he said he was in and it was great. And Jason [Bateman], when he was doing all the Juno press, he basically just talked up the movie. He got the publicity going before anything was real. So Mitch talked to Ron Howard, who said he would direct it, and he’s down. So I think Mitch was like, ‘I guess I’ll write it then,’ and that’s what I think he’s doing now.”

Some think that Bateman just talks about the movie for attention. Can you blame him? People are always going to be more interested in Arrested Development than in whatever supporting role he has in Hancock. And anyway, it worked - the possibility became much more of a reality because of his blabbing. At least, that’s what Alia thinks.

But take it with a grain of salt - it’s one of those projects that might happen in five years, maybe in two, or just stay in development hell for the rest of eternity. There is certainly fan and cast enthusiasm, but that doesn’t always translate to box office numbers.
