Because You Can Never Get Enough ABBA. Ever.
Mamma Mia! Here I go again! My my, how can I resist you? Mamma Mia, does it show again? My my, just how much I’ve missed you!
(EVERYBODY!)
YES, I’VE BEEN BROKEN-HEARTED! BLUUUUE SINCE THE DAY WE PARTED!
Sorry. Sorry, folks. I’d like to apologize for that. Like most, I find it impossible to look at the phrase “Mamma Mia” without singing along. ABBA may not be the band that revolutionized rock ‘n’ roll, but they sure are gosh darn catchy.
Some years ago, you may remember hearing radio commercials for - what else? - a musical adaptation of ABBA’s greatest hits. Naturally enough, it was called Mamma Mia! and had nothing to do with the band at all. It’s the story of a young woman who has never known her father, and, as her wedding day approaches, sends invitations to three men from her mother’s past. Hijinks ensue.
The musical was surprisingly popular, and so now, naturally enough, we have a movie.
Wide-eyed Amanda Seyfried (Veronica Mars, Mean Girls) will play the hopeful daughter, while Meryl Streep is her once-promiscuous mother. The three fathers will be portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan SkarsgÄrd. Naturally.
This is one of those upsettingly compelling films that may turn out to be great, like Black Snake Moan. Given the chance to see Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan in the same movie, I don’t think I can pass this one up - even if it means listening to ABBA for two hours.
