Buzz Aldrin Flies Again
Here’s one to mull over: an American actor who became famous playing a British character on American T.V. is about to star as an American hero in a British T.V. movie.
Confused? Let’s put some names to it. James Marsters, most famously the rogueish vamp Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is about to trade in his Cockney accent and sail across the pond to play Buzz Aldrin. The movie, Moonshot, will debut in July of 2009 to honor the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11’s landing.
Moonshot has no entries on Wikipedia or IMDB, so we only know what we are told. Buffy fans on the website Whedonesque are excited:
Outstanding, I love the history of the Apollo program and will look forward to the show. The fact that James will be acting the role of Buzz Aldrin is icing on the cake. Good choice!

I think JM is adorable, even in a Buzz cut. Yeah, like everyone is saying, they made a great casting choice. AARRGGHH, another thing I just can’t wait for!! I wonder how many things can pile up that you just can’t wait for until you explode?

So, one presumes he’ll be given special training in anti-caveman fighting tactics for this role…

(By the way, the caveman would probably win.)
James Marsters is the sort of guy who deserves much more than he gets. Much more of everything. Much more success, recognition, money, whatever - he’s a very funny, very genunine soul about whom no one has a bad thing to say. I guess it’s part of his integrity that he only takes small-time roles like this, but it’s frustrating, too - he could be such a phenomenal leading man in Hollywood, instead of dinking around on T.V. shows and in his rock band.
I want so much more for James than he wants for himself. That’s kind of sick, isn’t it? But the point is that he’ll undoubtedly be great as Buzz Aldrin, and we can all wait eagerly for the DVD release. Unless we live in Britain. Then we can watch it live.
Not fair.

You’ll be able to see this “live” regardless of which side of the pond you live on!
The TV film is a joint production of ITV (British) / History Channel (US) / ProSeiben (German) / and a Japanese affiliate I can’t recall at the moment. It will most certainly be broadcast in the US in July 2009 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the moon landing ~ on either the History Channel or Discovery Channel.
The program starts shooting June 3rd in Lithuania. Interesting there’s been no peep about other casting choices ~ I’ve no doubt James will steal the show with his portrayal of Buzz!
