Ceci n’est pas une pipe
Not since Kevin Kline played a hilarious français in French Kiss have we been in for such a cinematic treat.
Jason Reitman, director of the indie hit Juno, is knee-deep in pre-production for his next film, Pierre Pierre. Talk has been floating around since September, but now the rumors have solidified and Pierre Pierre is on.
Starring Jim Carrey as a “self-indulgent, lazy, French Nihilist,” Pierre Pierre is all about one man’s inspiring journey to take the Mona Lisa from Paris to London. Stolen, of course.
My first thought upon hearing this is, “again?” The Mona Lisa seems like way too easy of a target. It’s been stolen once for a period of two years, had acid thrown at it, and later, a rock. The painting now resides behind bulletproof glass, but they should seriously consider welding it to the wall or something.
Security has definitely increased in recent decades, so it’s a good thing Nihilists don’t believe in alarms. Exactly how Jim Carrey’s character obtains the painting is not yet known, only that it sends him on an inspiring journey to become less of a cynical jerk.
Carrey could play this role in a few different ways. While a successful but polarizing comic actor, he’s had the most critical acclaim in his dramatic roles. He certainly has the ability to pull off a serious French Nihilist à la Joel in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or the wacky French Kiss version. Personally, I’m hoping for the former.
