The remake flood continues unabated as a new and somewhat shocking development comes at us—an entire franchise is apparently up for remake this time, and when you hear just which it is…well…who knows?

You may be stunned. You may be shocked. You may be vaguely alarmed. But you likely won’t be nonplussed.

The series in question?

Ch-Ch-Chhhh Hahhh-hahh-hahhhh.

That’s right, from the onomatopoeia above, you can tell…it’s Friday the 13th. The entire series is at least rumored to get the remake treatment. Not just the first film, although that will be first. We’re going start to finish. Every one from the first Friday to Jason’s trip to Satan’s backyard, is going to get the treatment.

I’m of two minds about that.

Friday the 13th is twenty eight years old. Just a measly two years to go and it’ll be thirty. That is not a young film—considerable advances in effects technology have come and gone since then. Even film quality is an issue; the original print looks grainy and sounds worse. To give it a digital upgrade will just help preserve it. And yet, at the same time, remakes seldom stick very closely to the original source material. Thus, we’re in danger of losing a significant portion of horror history here. Friday the 13th, one of the first great slasher films—the second of the big three behind Halloween which landed in 1978—is in serious danger. If—more like when—the remakes hit, video stores are going to be forced to make a choice reflecting their limited shelf space, and that’ll mean the originals are most likely to wind up on the previously viewed sales floor, and possibly, out of our lives all across the country.

We can’t count on Netflix to take up the slack, people.
