Okay, I have to admit that sometimes, I like the thought of some remakes. Sometimes a remake can be as good as its original—take for example the Night of the Living Dead 1990 theatrical re-release. Some die hards may call it heresy, but I think it was a very well done remake. It altered very little of its predecessor’s direction and instead used modernized (and appreciably better!) special effects work to give the overall a nice and, let’s face it, much-needed facelift. It is not superior to its predecessor nor did it try to be. It was simply a worthy tribute to a ground-breaking original.

Which is why I find myself hopeful that the remake to Death Race (coming out on the order of soon) will prove to be a worthy tribute to a ground-breaking original.

A Good Engine, But Could Use New Paint

Death Race was actually pretty freaky if you stop and think about it. A government-sanctioned cross-country vehicular homicide frenzy with fans so thoroughly devoted they’d jump out in front of their favorite’s car to boost their score? Wow, says I.

Picture NASCAR, except it goes across the United States and even poor old Ricky Rudd might well win the race on points if enough people wait to get dashed across his grill. There are bonus points for hitting pedestrians in Death Race, so it’s possible to come in second or third and win on bonus points.

It’s a concept bleak and dystopian, and if it doesn’t provoke a thought or two I’ll be surprised. Thus, I rather look forward to a Death Race remake, and hope they stick to the original in updates. The thing’s so old that Stallone (who played one of the psychopathic drivers) didn’t even need illegal pharmaceuticals to give him the necessary physique!
